Sustainability Plan

Erä-Susi Oy is dedicated to providing guests with unforgettable experiences where animal welfare and sustainable development are at the core of everything we do. These values are part of our daily operations. We are committed to preventing and reducing the environmental impact of our activities and continuously developing our practices by setting new goals every year.

Our company provides a safe working environment where risk and crisis management are taken seriously. All employees, trainees, and volunteers are covered with accident insurance. We offer continuous training for our staff and actively communicate both to our employees and guests about safety, the importance of animal welfare, and dog-specific care practices. We openly share information about our sustainability efforts to increase awareness and commitment to environmental responsibility.

We support our local economy by prioritizing local producers and small businesses for food and other supplies. When recruiting, we aim to hire local employees, which supports employment and economic growth in the area. We also collaborate with other local businesses and service providers, such as cleaning and transportation companies. Responsible business practices, including energy efficiency and sustainability, are a core part of our operating philosophy and contribute to the long-term well-being of the region.

We recognize that procurement has a significant indirect environmental impact, especially regarding food and chemical products. Therefore, we are committed to using domestic dog food suppliers, eco-labeled products, and seasonal and local foods as much as possible. We do not use meat, fish, or shellfish from endangered or protected species. We minimize food waste, use washable Kupilka dishware, and ensure all cleaning products and tissues used on-site are eco-certified. We do not display or sell endangered plant or animal species, or any historical or archaeological items.

We actively collect customer feedback through various channels, including online surveys, customer service interactions, and direct communication. All feedback is carefully reviewed with our team to identify development opportunities and improve our services. Any changes made based on customer feedback are communicated clearly to enhance transparency and trust.

We are committed to ethical and responsible business practices. We do not offer gifts, benefits, or trips to public officials unless there is a clear business purpose. Any gifts exceeding a certain value must be reported and approved by management. Participation in events involving public officials is limited to business-related contexts, and all expenses are documented. We ensure transparency in the giving of gifts and benefits, provide regular anti-corruption training, and encourage reporting of any suspicious behavior.

We are also committed to inclusive customer service, offering equal services to all clients regardless of background or needs. Our facilities and services can be adapted for accessibility, and our marketing uses diverse images and messages to reflect different customer groups. Our inclusion efforts are clearly communicated on our website and social media, and we strive to continuously improve the experience for every visitor. We uphold equality and human rights and strongly oppose any form of exploitation or harassment.

One of the most direct environmental impacts comes from the consumption of resources like energy and water, and the careful sorting of waste. We work actively to reduce our energy and water use and minimize waste generation while improving recycling. Wherever possible, we use environmentally friendly products and resource-efficient technologies. We regularly monitor environmental efficiency through metrics like water, electricity, energy use, and waste volume. Most of our activities happen on winter, minimizing our impact on nature. We use only our own safari routes, which are regularly monitored and adjusted as needed.

We are committed to biodiversity and environmental protection. This includes promoting sustainable practices such as using Finnish products and dog food. Our company participates in biodiversity initiatives like groundwater flow monitoring. We aim to reduce our environmental footprint by recycling waste and lowering carbon emissions. Our long-term goal is to support biodiversity and sustainable regional development.

We also promote local culture by supporting regional cultural events and festivals. Our marketing and product offerings reflect local traditions and values. We actively share information about our cultural initiatives with our customers and partners.

In subcontracting agreements and day-to-day operations, we ensure compliance with all labor laws and workers’ rights.

Compliance with laws, regulations, and other requirements is our baseline — but we aim to go beyond that. We are committed to surpassing the current standards related to sustainable development and follow the principles of sustainable tourism as outlined by Metsähallitus and Visit Finland.

We strive to be at the forefront of developing both sled dog welfare and sustainable tourism, and to inspire other operators, customers, and our team to take part in meaningful sustainability efforts.
